  Learn the names of the people you want to know and greet them by name whenever you meet them.  People feel complimented when a near stranger takes the time and trouble to learn their name. Soon they will want to know who you are.

  The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that high school graduates earn on average about $30,700 a year.  A bachelor’s degree increases earnings to an average of $50,800 a year.  A master’s degree increases those earnings to almost $64,000 on average.   Increased education combined with employment experience could change your future exponentially!

  There is nothing sweeter than hearing your name. In business this is no different. It is critical that you use a customers name in the first 60 seconds of your conversation with them. Using your customer’s name relaxes them and tells them you find them important. Try it and see how well this works!

  Want to raise your credibility factor?  Jim Collins (author, Good to Great) notes that Level 5 Leaders look outside themselves when something goes well and look at themselves when something goes wrong.  Stop the blame game and admit your accountability.  Then, accept responjsibility to work on or influence the solution.

  Need some tips to build others’ trust in you? Do not promise anything you can not produce and follow-through on your promises. Keep confided information to yourself. Do not participate in gossip. Do not boast about your abilities. Create a reputation of loyalty, willingness to be there and stand by others. Be consistent, realistic, competent, honest, and truthful. Most of all be consistent and "Walk your talk."

  What is it? It is a form of networking and communication among people who are interested, or searching for information, on the same issues as you.

  How does it work? A leader posts a comment or topic of interest for discussion. You the reader, then reply with comments based on the leaders comment. Do you agree? Or, disagree? Give reasons why. Have you had a similar experience? Please share. There are others out there just like you searching for answers to similar circumstances who can benefit from your comments.

  Who is doing so well in their position that they do not need help from others?  This is such a simple process; it is as easy if not easier than typing an E-mail. Hopefully this blog eases apprehensions that you may be experiencing.

  Motivation is the FWI winter theme. Did this blog get you motivated to respond? Please let me know. What would you like to hear or talk about?   Careers in Tough Times

  The recession ahead could be long and disruptive to our current lifestyle.  But it can also be a time of new opportunities. As companies restructure, they are looking for new, innovative ideas.  Make yourself indispensable, know the new priorities of your company and take up the cause (i.e. Go Green).  Giving ideas and solutions that help the company and clients will put you in the driver's seat.  As you do this, you will be rewriting your job description and adding value to yourself and your company.

  An executive coach working for the newly merged Bank of America and Merrill Lynch says, "People never forget how you come across in extremis. If you can shine at this moment, you'll shine forever."  

  So make your New Years resolution to be Bold and Proactive.

  Be not afraid of growing slowly; be afraid only of standing still.  This old proverb certainly applies to the process of furthering your academic education.  While the journey can be lengthy, the rewards will be well worth the time.  New semesters will be starting soon, so take that first step toward your future.  And if an academic education is not your goal, find another source to increase your knowledge in any area of interest. Just don’t stand still!

  A component of coaching is communicating with your staff even when the situation gets sticky.

  Have you ever dealt with a crucial conversation only to end up with results you did not desire?

  It is probably because you are dealing with the wrong problem. How do you know if you’re dealing with the wrong problem? If the solution does not get you the results that you really desire, then you know you have chosen the wrong problem to deal with.

  A component of coaching is communicating with your staff.

   

  How you listen to your staff is a critical element to the communication process. To be an effective listener, you need three dimensions:

  • sensing, which entail hearing the words, and receiving the nonverbal
  • processing/evaluation, which includes interpreting and understanding the meaning
  • responding, has the listener sending the speaker verbal and nonverbal signals to let them know they are being heard.

  According to a survey conducted by the Society of Human Resource Management, the majority of recruiters spend less than three minutes reviewing a resume. One size does not fit all. Your resume is your marketing tool.  Therefore, it needs to be streamlined, targeted and visually appealing.  How do you make it stand out?  It should be tailored to the job just like a cover letter. The easier and clearer you make it, the better chance you have of them reading your resume.

Good to Great is a book that defines “good” to “great” companies, relays information, results, and a foundation to follow, from a study that researched companies that were able to make the transition from “good” to “great” organizations. Collins and his team discovered; hierarchy of leadership consists of five levels and good to great companies consist of level five leaders. Curious?   It seems that every time you open a window to the Internet, an advertisement pops up telling you that you can earn a degree ONLINE.  However, it is a case of "buyers beware."  Schools that simply "sell" a degree are obvious scams, but what about those who require a substantial amount of work (and money) to obtain a degree?  You should always verify the accreditation status of any school that you are interested in attending, not just online schools.

  There are three kinds of people:  Those that make things happen, those that watch things happen, and those that say “What Happened?  All of us want to be a “mover and shaker,” but fear of failure holds many of us prisoner.

   

  In the closing keynote address, Leap!  The Net Will Appear!  Bruce Christopher challenged us to move outside of our comfort zone by sharing the secret only optimists know.   Did you know that optimists see failure as a temporary situation, as something to learn from, and as something to NOT do again? On the other hand, a pessimist views failure as pervasive, personal and persistent by comparing themselves to others.   Bottom line, it is your ATTITUDE toward fear of failure that will shape your personal, professional, and emotional growth!

   

  So what are the secrets of those optimists?  It is the WAY THEY TALK TO THEMSELVES! 

   

  In order to LEAP through fear, you must continually push yourself OUTSIDE of your comfort zone.  Once pushed, the comfort wall around you will begin to stretch so that the next time you feel fear about a new decision or action, the LEAP will be less difficult.  However, if you continually turn away and hide in your comfort zone, the walls will begin to thicken, trapping you inside making the next decision or action even more difficult to obtain. 

   

  Are you an optimist or a pessimist?  Remember that your ATTITUDE toward fear can either hold you back or let you soar.  Take a chance!  LEAP outside your comfort zone and achieve your goals.

  If you want to move ahead in your career it’s important to see and be seen. That’s why attending conferences, making presentations, and being recognized for industry awards is critical.

  I was reminded of this once again today as I was participating in the FWI annual recognition program at FWI’s 86th Annual Conference in Denver.  FWI and conference attendees honored the 2008 award recipients for the Partner in Success, Member of the Year, Group of the Year and District of the Year.

  What’s the take-away? When you have the opportunity to nominate yourself or someone else for an award, do it – even if it means you have to push yourself to do so. Then, if you are honored as an award recipient show up to receive your reward, be recognized and then promote the heck out of it. After all, you deserve the award and the visibility that goes along with it.

  The result? The visibility may put you in position for your next promotion either inside or outside of your company.

  What a great time we are having in Denver! This morning started out with a non-denominational service featuring Bill Jackson who is FWI’s Thelma Jackson’s husband. He inspired us with analogies and stories that made us laugh, think and smile!

   

  Our keynote speaker today was Wesley Goo. He pushed us into overdrive with his motivational talk. Our take a-ways from Mr. Goo include:

   

  In today’s environment in order to get excellent results, we need to be outstanding.

  To be outstanding, we need to rid ourselves of seven deadly patterns.

   

  1)      No Money - I don’t have any money! It’s never about your resources; it’s about your ability to be resourceful!

  2)      No Time - Oh, you know what, I have no time! I’m too busy! How will you have time if you don’t make the time? If you are truly committed, you will make the time! “Busyness, is the supreme form of laziness!” Focus on areas that produce for you! It’s all about your commitment!

  3)      Laziness! “Just do it” and it will get done! Figure out what you do to be “Emotionally Juicy” – need to be passionate about what you do!

  4)      Fear! Tonight at 11:00pm, something under your sink will kill you! Instill a sense of fear! Become so upset with yourself, that you say screw it! Chase fear, don’t let it chase you! Stop! And find something that empowers you and chase it until you beat it into the ground! Master Fear!

  5)      Blame! It’s not our fault, it’s the market’s fault! We have a tendency to blame anything and everything! We blame “Me!” Blaming will leave you powerless. Take ownership. The answer is to think about what can I do now to bring about a different situation? Destroy blame!

  6)      Procrastination! I’ll do it tomorrow! Law in business for procrastination is L.O.D.I. which = Law of diminishing intent (Your best intentions decrease over time)! To get rid of L.O.D.I., destroy it in your own life first! Likes attract likes! “Start doing things NOW!”

  7)      I’m working on it! This is procrastination in sheep’s clothing! Delays stall you! I’ll do it tomorrow! Law in business for procrastination is L.O.D.I. which = Law of diminishing intent! To get rid of L.O.D.I., destroy it in your own life first! Likes attract likes! “Start doing things NOW!”

   

  Need to break through the wall.  How?  Emotional Muscle! Get rid of the seven deadly patterns by building emotional muscle, break through the wall, and you can accomplish everything. You will gain freedom, contentment, flexibility, financial freedom, have good health, and passionate relationships! To get emotional muscle:

   

  1)      Be aware of your needs and be honest!

  2)      Reaching 212 degrees (boiling point – fed up!)

  3)      Decide and do it now!

  4)      Enroll yourself in the (emotional/mental) gym! Get yourself into a program.

   

  Don’t just remember this! Translate this into your heart and body!

  Sales training continues to be our organization’s focus.  Keith Harrell says it best when he challenges us to challenge our challenges. We may feel out of our comfort zone at times, but when we face our challenges head-on, we often learn that our greatest fears are nothing to worry about.

   

  We can really feel good about ourselves when we face a challenge and find out that our fears were merely our thoughts projecting self-defeat. Get out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself to meet your fears head-on and become a winner! Then, let us know about your successes! We love to hear about them!

  Water boils at 212 degrees. At 211 degrees, it is merely hot.  What difference does one degree make? Boiling produces steam which can power a locomotive.  As a leader, what can you do to move your team one degree – the difference between having a good year versus a great year?

  Don’t forget to contact the scholarship office at your chosen school!  You will be AMAZED at the many different and unusual types of scholarships available.  Check to see if there is a “Women’s Center” or “Non-traditional Student Department” on campus.  There are often additional scholarship/funding opportunities that are designed to help women achieve their educational goals.

  Successful coaching involves creating a game plan for developing your staff’s sales skills that include; pre-training, during training and post training meetings. Determine a start and stop time and stick to it for each session. Prepare a list of items to cover, including the goals you have for the training.

  How often do we hear or use these words for directions?

  Unclear directions are the reason we end up off course. 

  How about your career?

   What do you do when you come to a crossroad?

  Plunge ahead? Check your GPS? Ask for directions?

   

  Clear directions are KEY to reaching your destination/goal.

  Leaders at the top should be able to mix well with subordinates looking at past successes and failures while fixing on the creative ideas and plans that will bring the company into the future. As executives utilize current potential they need to create a balance to explore new opportunities too.

  A Federal Reserve Bank study indicates women gained 9 to 11 hours MORE leisure time per week over the past 40 years. (Okay so it didn’t indicate which planet they were from.) Create more leisure time by scheduling it on your calendar. Then ditch your Blackberry to actually enjoy it.

  Stay in the running with these tips:

  1. Fonts: easy to read, black ink
  2. Action verbs: organize, implement, lead
  3. E-mail address: be professional; avoid cute, funny names

  William Butler Yeats reminds us that "Education is not filling a bucket, but lighting a fire."  Choose something new and exciting to learn this month.

   

  Whatever your “fire” might be, remember that education does not mean you must attend a class! Learning opportunities can be found in everyday life.

  Sales and coaching go hand in hand.  You can’t have one without the other. Coaching builds relationships that develop leadership, improve performance, assist strategic plans, and improve communication skills, just to name a few.  In order to make it all work, you need accountability; without it, your program will die. What is your organization doing?

  Saying “I’m sorry” may limit your career potential. Think I’m wrong? During your next business meeting count how many times women say, “You know... maybe ... perhaps ... I may be wrong, but...” versus the men. Then add up the titles.  If I’m wrong, well, then I guess (gulp) I’m sorry!
